This was the inner air cleaner lid used on the Mercury Cougars equipped with a 428 Ram Air Cleaner or 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air Cleaner assembly. Although you will often find chrome under the blue engine paint on these lids they are in fact supposed to be painted from the factory. This lid is 14-1/8 inches in diameter. This particular mid-plate has a seemingly factory installed tab welded to the backside.  This unit was not found on a 1968 Mercury Cougar but does have the wrinkles indicative of a 68 lid.  The tab located at 12 o'clock makes it rather difficult to install the Air Cleaner to hood seal. This Grade A quality ashtray lid was located at the rear of the console and was used on all 1967 - 1968 Mercury Cougars except the 1967 standard model and the 1968 XR7G. This ashtray differs from other ashtrays you will see on various Ford products in that it has a brushed finish and a slightly taller lower section. This engine compartment lamp assembly includes lamp socket, bracket, mercury switch, and length of wire. A bit of investigation shows us that an inline fuse was used on the single wire and it has an amp rating of 7.5 amps.Replaces part # C9WY-15702-A

Ford calls this part a 'mask'. This clamps to the chromed lever and holds the socket and bulb that are attached to the neutral safety switch, which are the shifter indicator light for the floor shifter.
