1967 - 1970 Manual or power steering OEM factory conversion tips.

The drag links, pitman arms, and idler arms are all specific to manual or power steering suspension systems. Meaning that these three components need to be changed together during a conversion. Another thing to consider, the factory installed 20:1 steering boxes into cars with manual steering. Cougars and Mustangs with the Competition Handling package (sometimes called Improved Performance Option) received the 16:1 ratio steering box which is the same as all 1967-70 cars with factory power steering. On manual steer cars, the 20:1 ratio box requires much less effort to turn the steering wheel, but requires 4-5/8 turns 'lock to lock'. The 16:1 ratio steering box requires considerable more effort but requires only 3-3/4 turns of the wheel - 'lock to lock'.

Factory stamped D0ZA-3C511-A. There are three versions of this bracket and all are functionally identical. It appears the early version had no part number in 1970, later in the 1970 model year this version appeared with the D0ZA casting number on it and then in 1971 you see the D1ZA casting number. Of the three brackets this appears to be the hardest to obtain. This bracket can only be used in conjunction with the new for 1970, all steel pump mounting bracket. 1970 Boss 302 and 351 Cleveland...

This new for 1970 bracket, is also to be used in conjunction with the all steel "C" shaped pump mounting bracket. Not to be confused with the 351C or Cleveland bracket. The engineering # stamped on the part is D0AA-3C511-D and the MPC lists the part # as D0AZ-3C511-A. This is a rather hard part to find as most 1970 - 1971 Cougars came with the 351c. Unfortunately we have had a high rate of returns due to failure on these and can no longer enthusiastically recommend them. Please consider our original rebuilt units. This is the large nut control valve that Ford switched to after 1967. Many 1967 Cougars have been converted to the 1968 valve over the years so you may want to double check your valve before ordering. These units are designed to use type F fluid, not off the shelf power steering fluid. Please follow the procedures for...

This unit was used only one year on the Cougar and is unique because of its smaller fitting (1/4") for the pressure hose. Many 1967 Cougars have been converted to the 1968 valve over the years so you may want to double check your valve before ordering. We highly recommend upgrading to the large nut (5/16") control valve as the small nut control valve posses a potential safety issue, thus the reason why Ford replaced it the following year. The small nut system was engineered dangerously close...

Installation of this bracket is easy but you will have to make a spacer to fit on the outside of the frame rail. Hopefully you bought this bracket first before you tore out the nut inserts in the frame. If not you will need to get them up for now. Then tap the bracket toward the the outside of the car and make sure the cross bolt lines up. Then measure the gap and make a spacer to fit. A half inch nut and a couple of washers usually work just fine. It's not necessary to get fancy with this...
