They were taller than the standard antenna so mounting them on the driver side would protect them from low lying branches and other obstructions that more often come in contact with the passenger side of the car. This premium antenna and base is a very close reproduction. Note that it comes with a Mustang base gasket which will work on your Cougar, but will tilt the angle of the mast slightly. This is the correct, original cover for your 1969-70 Mercury Cougar and 1969-70 Ford Mustang antenna. The Ford MPC calls this part a cap, it is the stainless steel rectangular piece of trim that goes on top of your factory antenna base. These are angled, so watch the orientation when installing.  Most of these had a paper tag with part number and "FRONT" installed at the factory. This is the correct, original gasket for your 1971-73 Mercury Cougar antenna. Not only is it much thicker than the Ford Mustang gasket, but it also has a different overall geometry to it.
