    Description

This premium antenna and base is a very close reproduction. Note that it comes with a Mustang base gasket which will work on your Cougar, but will tilt the angle of the mast slightly. Your antenna gasket options are to buy a used one from us, reuse your gasket, modify the Mustang gasket, or just live with an antenna that is tilted and looks wacky.

The gasket on the right is what comes with the kit.  It is a Mustang gasket and designed to fit the contour of a Mustang fender.  The gasket on the left is a Used Cougar Gasket and is what you will need for a perfect fit.  Some (but not all) Cougar base gaskets have a Ford casting # of C9WA-18298-B.  This is not a part number.

    Pros:
    • Nice looking reproduction
    Cons:
    • Holes in bracket did not match fender
    • Rattles
Overall this is a nice piece. However, the screw holes in the mounting bracket did not line up with the holes in my fender. I ended up having to drill another hole and only use 2 or the 4 fixing screws. This may have been the fault of my fender and not the antenna. Hard to tell. The telescopic part of the antenna does rattle somewhat. But I guess the original ones probably did the same thing.

    Question
    DainJ Asked:
Is there any way to unscrew the mast from the base? My 96 F350 has an identical-looking base plate and gasket but its one-piece antenna (not telescoping) simply unscrews from the base. I was wondering if I could just put it on the Cougar (1969) instead, since the Cougar's antenna got snapped off. Either way, can the antenna be replaced without having to unplug the line to the dash and doing all that under-hood work?

    Answer
You might have to visit the forum for that one, classiccougarcommunity.com To be honest we've never had the need to try to do that, but I think it's impossible

Maybe a stupid question...will it improve reception from an original 1969 antenna?

    WCCC Admin Answered:

It is not an amplified antenna; it is basically the same thing as an original. If there is something wrong with your original antenna or if the cable is kinked on the original, it might be better.

We do have an amplified antenna (https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/antuv-hideaway.html), but I had one installed in my car and, in my experience, it only marginally improved the radio signal. I did notice that the Bluetooth to FM transmitter I used worked better with the amplified antenna.
