This air cleaner was used on the 1967 GT Cougar only. It was possible to order a 390 GT motor for your Cougar without ordering the 390 GT package. Cougars equipped with the 390 6.5 Litre engine that did not come with the GT package would have used the air cleaner with a long tapered snorkel and painted lid. This was the inner air cleaner lid used on the Mercury Cougars equipped with a 428 Ram Air Cleaner or 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air Cleaner assembly. This particular mid-plate has a seemingly factory installed tab welded to the backside.  This unit was not found on a 1968 Mercury Cougar but does have the wrinkles indicative of a 68 lid.  The tab located at 12 o'clock makes it rather difficult to install the Air Cleaner to hood seal.
