This air cleaner base (Ford part number C8OZ-9600-C) was used on all 1969 BOSS 302, 1969 S code 390 IP (Improved Performance) Cougars and 1969 Cougars equipped with a Q code 428 CJ. The air cleaner shown here was taken from a 1969 390 S code with a 21C date (March 21st). The Cobra Jet Cougars saw a minor change in these air cleaners on February 17th (or close) 1969. The change included the addition of a small metal strap that was spot welded to the lower portion of the passenger side of the base. This strap supported an added heat tube for the choke to help keep the choke on longer as there was an issue with the choke shutting off too soon. This change is outlined in TSB (technical service bulletin) #114, issued on May 2nd 1969 and the Ford part number of the revised base is C9OZ-9600-H. R code Cougars did not use this base as there was no need for the rectangular vacuum actuated side port when the Ram Air cars brought extra air flow through the upper "flapper" door. This unit is similar to the 1970 Q and G code bases but the 1970 used a plastic 90 degree base instead on the metal one shown here. Other differences are outlined in our listing of the 1970 base (coming soon).
