How do you cool off a hot Cougar?

I bought my 69 Cougar in Jul of '09 as a retirement from the Army gift to myself.

From day 1 it had intermittent heating problems that I tried to fix. I changed the radiator, thermostat, water pump, and added 2 12 in 1400 cfm electric cooling fans.

That setup worked fine until the outside temperature went over 90 degrees, then the car went over 220 degrees. Next, I went to a 3-row radiator, high flow water pump, and a 24in electric fan pumping out 3200 cfm's. My temps rose to 230 degrees in stop and go traffic and 90+ degree heat. I had a plan: I bought a 4 row Champion aluminum radiator from eBay, and I was about to pull the trigger on 2 12in 3000 cfm electric fans, but I had a hard time convincing myself that they would fix my problem.

I listened to the Under the Hood Show podcast and they talked about how old school cars in the 60's never had as many heating problems as the owners complain about in modern times.

Frustrated, I decided to call Don at WCCC and see what he thought. I remember Don saying to the effect of, "the 429 Cobra Jet Cougar had a 7-blade clutch cooling system, and it never failed." From Jul of 09 to Jul of 19 I had spent well over $1800 dollars chasing my overheating issue and I was afraid to drive my car any long distance in the heat after I had a mind changing incident occur one time. My brother-in-law wanted me to bring the Cougar 700 miles to show it off to family in Iowa. We made it there no problem, but on the way back the temperature got in the 90's and the car hit 220 and kept going up. I pulled over and called myself releasing the pressure on the radiator by lifting up on the handle on the radiator cap. I stupidly turned the cap, and the pressure made it shoot off. Well, I got a free "hot water" exfoliating facial treatment and I invested a lot of money at Walmart on about 10 gallons of water and a couple bags of ice to take the sting out my now beet red face. And I still had to drive about 300 miles before I got home.

I tell you, this incident stuck out in my mind when Don said that the clutch fan kit he sold should fix my problem. So, I bought it and anxiously waited for the kit to arrive. When it came, I put it on over the next few days and that weekend I took the car on a test drive. The outside temperature was about 90 degrees, my car topped out at 210 degrees and the needle stopped rising. when I drove off and got air flowing at speed it dropped to 190. Once I put the correct radiator fluid in the car instead of mostly water the temperature topped out at 200 in stop and go driving.

After almost 10 yrs of grief, I was finally able to say that my overheating problem was fixed. Thank you, Don.

WCCC has provided the most extensive resources that I have seen for these Classic Cats

My 1971 Cougar XR7 was retrofitted with a Ford “400”, Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb, TCI Street Fighter trans, B & M Hammer shifter, and dual turbo exhaust. While this sounds interesting, the Cougar itself was seriously neglected and abused. Poorly modified wiring that contributed to multiple lighting issues, etc., etc. left me scratching my head. A long road ahead.

From parts (used, repro, and retro updates), to electrical diagrams, and tech support, WCCC has provided the most extensive resources that I have seen for these Classic Cats.

Thank you all!!!

Best Regards,
Frank

Total support

Just got my quarter window glass installed in my restored quarter window frames; could not be happier!

I got screwed! I mean glove box screws....

WCCC hooked me up with an original glove box cable and the correct screws WITH shoulders for my glove box. Their listing for these screws explains that the original screws have a shoulder for the cable and most people put in the wrong screws--which is exactly what was in my car. I ordered a bunch of other small parts along with these and everything was EXACTLY as described, which is why buying from these folks is the only right answer.

Thanks for over 30 years of Mercury Cougar support!

Couldn't have done it without you guys

I have been a cougar owner for just shy of 30 years, I have been dealing with part problems for a very long time. The people at WCCC have always be honest, and overly helpfull. I now have a 1970 XR-7 mostly rebuilt, and my son has a 1968 base model. I have made the trek to Salem a few times now and its amazing to see in person. I know we will be able to keep these cars running for a long time to come! Thank you guys!

I am blessed to have found WCCC

What did you LIKE about your experience? * :

I am fairly new to WCCC, four or five orders (at the time of writing), but I am blessed to have found WCCC for sure. I had a small problem, couldn't find anything to work for the condensation drain on my a/c evaporator. Tried all sort of Auto-Store hoses, ideas, rigging, and nothing would allow the "bend" needed to get through the firewall w/o kinking the hose, which of course made it useless. I found WCCC site through a Duck Duck Go search for "replacing a heater core on a 1969 Mercury Cougar." That took me to a video, where I watched the removal video provided by WCCC AND ! ! ! ! when it got to the point where it showed removing the drain line, a link lit up with something to the effect of "part #" and I clicked it, and WHAA LAA, one happy happy man. I love how almost every part has a video on how to install/replace, and/or every video has a clickable link to the part. Genius. The forum and the people who are dedicated to it take personal individual issues and walk you through an honest answer that is easily followed, not the usual stuff you find where if you aren't an expert yourself, you can't understand the answer, it's a specific correct answer, not generic - leaving you with more questions and more confused or frustrated. Excellent excellent stuff here! And, "service" is a weak word for what WCCC does, the staff is fantastic and has held my hand and walked me through every operator to keyboard error I've made, nonjudgmental, friendly, helpful and extremely professional. What a wonderful wonderful experience. I feel real bad for car owners who have not yet learned that WCCC exists. I'm here to tell you, everybody I know does, cuz I can't stop praising them for everything they offer, do, and stand behind it all without reservation. Thank you WCCC... and, Darrell ... YOU ARE THE MAN! YOU ROCK !

Also, the 1157 to LED! Worth it.

Long time customer 69 Convertable

I have been working with Don Rush and his team for close to 20 years. In all of these years with many sales transactions I can say they have been 2nd to none. They have always been not only helpful but extremely knowledgeable. I certainly continue to use WCCC as my number one resource for my Cougar parts.

Thank you for the memories and service.

I have made many purchases online with WCCC but chose this time to make a 1400 mile round trip and visited them in person.

I brought a van load of parts with me that needed a home. Don helped unload them then quickly assessed the value which I spent quickly. My experience was that of respect for what Don and his employees have done for the Cougars and communities that surround the car itself.

Don was more than fair and helpful of what my needs were. It was a dream come true to meet them all and spend some time talking and touring their shop and bone yard. I look forward to my next visit where I will be arriving in the Cougar they helped me build.

Thank you for the memories and service.

Many thanks to Joshua and Darrell

I liked that I could see a picture of parts and that you could type in what you were looking for. What was handy for me was the ability to chat with Darrell. He was a big help. Also high on the you gotta keep on staff was Joshua, I had some issues getting you guys paid for my order, but he hung in there and made it happen. Many thanks to Joshua and Darrell. Darrell and Joshua are keepers. They responded quickly to my emails and made things happen.
