The original tops would have been double texture PinPoint Vinyl.
There are 3 different materials currently offered for these premium tops.
Single Texture PinPoint Vinyl (GOOD):
This is the material that is offered by almost all Mustang Vendors and it looks the same on the surface as an OEM top.
This is a two-ply composite which has an outer layer of canvas-looking PVC vinyl plastic, and an inner layer of dyed 100% cotton sateen.
It is often referred to as an OEM replacement, but that is not exactly accurate. Original tops had a layer of vinyl, a layer of rubber and then another layer of vinyl. The layer of rubber is to prevent water from being able to seep through the layers of vinyl and drip on the interior of the car. These are excellent quality vinyl convertible tops if you never intend to let water sit on the top of your convertible. Because of this, it is hard to recommend using this top in the pacific northwest, or in any area that tends to have unexpected rain showers.
That being said, this is a high quality top that we use on our own cars including our 1969 428 Cobra Jet XR7.
Backing: Single Texture PinPoint Vinyl comes with a black backing regardless of top color.
SailCloth Texture Vinyl (BETTER):
This material is more true to an OEM Style convertible top.
This material has an outer layer of PVC plastic, but it has an inner layer of gray blended poly/cotton drill fabric. It is the material used on more modern Mustangs.
The OEM style double texture top is no longer available, but this single texture Sailcloth top is made from material that is much better than the original. Its texture a little larger than the original / reproduction single texture PinPoint vinyl, and looks more like canvas than the PinPoint vinyl does.
Backing: SailCloth Texture Vinyl comes with a grey backing regardless of top color.
StayFast Canvas (BEST):
This kind of top was known as "cloth top" back in the day and is a true canvas top.
This material is made of three layers of fade resistant Stayfast 100% acrylic cloth, a rubber inner-layer, and laminated to black or tan cotton backing.
One of the major advantages of canvas over vinyl is that it does not crack if exposed to large amounts of sun and heat. A great upgrade if you live in a sunny climate.
Backing: StayFast Canvas comes with either a black or tan backing depending on the color of top.
Window options:
The back windows are available in either plastic or glass. We highly recommend going with the glass back window when you order this top. Glass rear windows greatly enhance rear visibility. The glass windows are not prone to scratching, cracking or yellowing due to exposure to the sun that the plastic windows are susceptible to. The plastic windows on these carries an 12 month warranty only against separating from the top, the glass windows on these carries an 3 year warranty only against separating from the top and the rest of the top is covered by a 3 YEAR Manufacturer Warranty.
This is the convertible top only. Don't forget to add the top bows, tack strips, and tension cables, as they are NOT included with this item.
