Inside door handle release mechanism for the passenger side on 1971-72 Cougar and Mustang. This latch mechanism went through a couple of revisions by the end of 1973. Ford calls this part a 'control and link assembly', this particular one only works with the deluxe door handles as shown in the photo. The Ford MPC describes those door handles as fitting the door panels with molded armrests, instead of the smaller detachable armrests on the base interiors. This style was used from 6/1/1971 through 9/15/1971 It uses two bolts for attaching and has the heavy duty spring, which is the reason for the first revision. This latch will work and is suggested for replacement on the early 1971 cars.
