This spring has two functions. The first is to connect the rod that opens the latch to the deck lock cylinder. The second is to put tension on the cylinder so as to return the key to its perpendicular resting place after unlocking the deck lid. Check out this video

This particular mid-plate has a seemingly factory installed tab welded to the backside.  This unit was not found on a 1968 Mercury Cougar but does have the wrinkles indicative of a 68 lid.  The tab located at 12 o'clock makes it rather difficult to install the Air Cleaner to hood seal. This was the inner air cleaner lid used on the Mercury Cougars equipped with a 428 Ram Air Cleaner or 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air Cleaner assembly. Although you will often find chrome under the blue engine paint on these lids they are in fact supposed to be painted from the factory. This lid is 14-1/8 inches in diameter. This lid is found on many years and cars 1968 - 1971. The diameter of the lid is just over 17 3/4", fits on 17.84" air cleaner bases. Used dog dish style hubcap that will show paint loss / fading and at least one ding on our grade B driver quality example. Most early Cougars used the full hubcap / wheel cover, so this one is rarely found on a Cougar. C5AZ-10A370-C Alternator mounting spacer, goes between the cylinder head and alternator housing. Fits 1968-70 390-2V, 390-4V, and 428CJ engines. Smog OK. There is no casting number but one is listed C5AE-10A370-C. Inside diameter 7/16". We measure them out at 1-5/8 inches long, supposed to be pink anodized or tinted.
