Ford calls this part a 'mask'. This clamps to the chromed lever and holds the socket and bulb that are attached to the neutral safety switch, which are the shifter indicator light for the floor shifter. This group of parts mounts to the top of the AT shifter arm and rides against the thumb activated button on your T shift handle. Its function is to lift the cable that runs through the chrome shifter stem to lock and unlock the shifter out of Park. The Ford technical name for this part is 'Roller - Shift Lever Lock'. This gives the thumb release button in your T shaped shift handle its tension. If it is rusted then your button will not return back to its outer position easily. Fits 1967-73 Mercury Cougar and 1965-73 Ford Mustang. Technically this spring fits all Ford and Mercury floor shifters 1965-73. Ford part number C5ZZ-7C300-A.
