This deluxe wood-grain two spoke wheel was used on the majority of the Mercury Cougars built for 1968 and many other Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars through 1969. The back portion of the wheel on the 1968 Cougar Decor level interior cars was color coded to the interior of the car. On the Standard models for 68, the first part of the year would have used a wood grained deluxe wheel and the later part of the year was a solid colored wheel. The benefit of going reproduction on this wheel as opposed to restoring your current cracked wheel is that the cost is lower and no core is required. Also, the mylar band has been upgraded to stainless and will not crack, peel or yellow like the original. It has been our experience that restored wheels that have had cracks filled in will in time, when exposed to extreme heat and cold, have hairline cracks reappear. This wheel has been clear coated with four coats of polyurethane for protection and luster. Note that the wood-grain front portion is smooth and not textured like original.
NOTE: The 1968 XR7 would always use the black backed wheel, as the XR7 package had the lower dash and steering column painted black as well.
