Most Cougar owners don't realize how many things in our cats rely on proper vacuum to operate. Replacing a faulty check valve might save you hours of troubleshooting every vacuum system one at a time.

This is the easiest piece to check if you have vacuum issues with your headlight doors, and after 50+ years, mine didn't hold vacuum at all. I didn't even bother with my MightyVac to test this piece. You can pull it out and use a finger and draw air on the alternate ports to see if it holds, or just lets air flow like my bad one.



I had 4 problems in my system, (actuator, tank, loose lines and this valve) and replaced them one at a time to compare results. I didn't think about this valve at first and might have accepted some minor/slow leaks in the other components if I had started with this part.

I have a 1971 Ranchero with the hideaway headlights. I found the car in a field where it had been resting not-so-comfortably for 11 years. Got it up and running, replaced the specific headlight switch for the hideaway lights and was amazed that the headlight doors operated perfectly; but that was only when the car/truck was running and had vacuum. As soon as you turned off the engine, the headlight doors slowly creaked up.

Met a guy at a car show this summer with an perfect Cougar Eliminator. He said that 90% of the time, the hideaway problem was caused by the check valve. I order this one up and it fixed the problem, at least for 12 hours or so the doors stay shut. This isn't a big problem for me- I just don't like coming out from an errand to the parking lot and seeing the headlight doors raised Next step is to start replacing the ancient vacuum lines to see if the doors will stay shut even longer. I've heard that even if you overhaul the entire system, they won't stay shut indefinitely unless the vehicle is started every once in awhile.
