While my dash was removed on my 68 Cougar base model to install a quartz clock, I replaced all bulbs with these great looking LED dash bulbs with Blue Light Diffusers. I must admit while driving the car the other night the instrument brightness display was 100 times better than the old green display dash light.
Made a big difference in lighting at night. Now I can read my gauges.
If you pulling your gauge cluster for any reason, this is the time to put these in. Super easy installation, and they look amazing. Solid recommend.
I recommend doing the white paint step while you've got the dash apart. I tried it both ways and painting both the housing and backing really made everything pop to life. I replaced the diffusers as well and the dash lighting has never looked so good, likely better than it was from the showroom. LED's are of course not "original" but who cares when it looks this good! Only caution is to be careful when removing the wiring harness. I accidentally caused an internal "break" of the temp and fuel gauge power wire. I opted to just replace the harness over repairing the original.
LED housing is delicate so care needs to be take when inserting LED. Follow instructions carefully. AMP lite is not replaceable on standard 1968. It needs to be a bulb for proper recharging of battery. Order a NEW 1895 bulb to replace AMP bulb so all lites are new. Otherwise you will find yourself paying $8 shipping for a $1 part. Good thing I had cougar bucks :)
'68 XR-7.. wonderful green illumination. However, the instructions leave quite a bit to be desired. The color scheme on the printed directions for the XR-7 is off. Difficult to figure out where the red bulb goes (probably the brake warning light). Ultimately two white bulbs are left over. Used the two bulbs I originally bought for the clock on the oil pressure gauge. I need to re-order two more illumination lamps for the clock. Overall, very satisfied with the illumination and the color. By the way, I did not replace the filters, I just inserted the new bulbs without disassembling the entire dash pods. Looks like it did in 1968..nice green color
Great diagram and good quality LEDs for the dash. I had just replaced the bulbs when installing these. The brightness is better but not blindingly bright. The best benefit for me is they'll never likely need replacing again and they draw less power.
Very bright gauges now easy install - follow the directions on cutting the springs Bonus----if you have a "Custom Auto Sounds" radio like I do, the Dash lights will now match the radio.
I have installed the new L.E.D. lights in my dash, but have not powered the system yet. I am still working n resurrecting the dash bezels and installing the walnut inserts that I made in my shop. The instruction in the light kit were very helpful and complete. I can't wait to see the dash when it's finished. I plan to come to West Coast Classic Cougars on my west coast trip next week. I want to see the place and buy some new red instrument light filters.
