    Description

New pair of weld in shock tower reinforcement plates cut from 11 gauge steel (1/8") for the Mercury Cougar or Ford Mustang. It is common knowledge that one of the main design flaws of the early Cougar or Mustang are the shock towers. Because of this design flaw, it is common (even with pampered, low mile, completely stock cream puffs) for the shock towers to have some degree of cracking as they were never designed to fit an oversized wheel and tire package, be cornered hard or handle the heavy weight or high torque of a big block. Many attempt to offset this front end flex by replacing the two shock tower braces with an export brace. While this does greatly improve the rigidity of the front end, it does not address the flex that occurs in the center portion of the shock tower where cracks typically tend to form. These braces triangulate the towers with the rest of the chassis to add much needed strength where it is needed most, the mounting points of the upper arms. Because of the headaches cracked shock towers can cause (as well as a significant hit in your car's value), we consider these units to be one of the best single investments you can make for your Cat or Pony.

These reinforcing plates are easy to install and fit at an angle on the inside lower portion of your shock towers. Even if you do not regularly corner your Cougar or Mustang hard, they will keep the shock towers from cracking on your increasingly valuable vehicle. When you combine these units with our reinforced lower crossmember and one piece export brace, you will not only have a much better handling car, but you will also have a cheap insurance policy for your shock towers as they are very unlikely to ever crack. They are an especially good investment for you 69-70 convertible owners out there too! To learn more, read the BOSS 302 Chassis Modification book we have listed in our manual section

    Pros:
    • Peace of Mind
    • Great Fit
    • Quality part
    Cons:
    • Welder required
As you can see in my picture, once front end was all cleaned up, I had two cracks in the shock tower on the upper left of the picture above where the reinforcement plate was welded in. This 67 Cougar XR7 was completely stripped to bare metal and then these plates were welded in. It has been 7 years since these plates were added and no issues since. It is a great peace of mind to have these strengthening plates in place. I am not a welder, so I had a welder do the work and you cannot tell they were added. I highly recommend these reinforcement plates if you are doing any front end work at all. I also have the export brace in place.

    Pros:
    • good fit
    • added strength
    Cons:
I didn't have any cracks in my shock towers as I have had an export brace and Monte Carlo bar on the car for as long as I have owned it. I got these plates to further strengthen the shock towers so I could possibly delete the Monte Carlo bar for ease of working in the engine compartment. The plates fit well with no problems. Paint them with satin black and they look like they belong there. This is a good modification in my opinion, and I recommend these plates.

    Asked:
Hi, I notice in the video West Coast produced, the plate was skip-welded in place. Is that final welding or is it stronger to put a continuous bead all around the plate? Thank you Jim

    WCCC Admin Answered:

If you look at our Chassis upgrade video, Don says to put a good penetrating bead all the way around the shock tower brace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgxL4xnTTZ4&t=478s&start=478

Why am I being warned about potential exposure to chemicals in motor vehicle parts?

    • Some chemicals in motor vehicle parts are on the Proposition 65 list because they can cause cancer and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm.
    • When purchasing USED or NOS items, we do not know if listed chemicals are present in these products.
    • This product is known to contain the following listed chemicals:
