Inside door handle release mechanism for the driver side on 1972-73 Cougar and Mustang. This latch mechanism went through a couple of revisions by the end of 1973. Ford calls this part a 'control and link assembly', this particular one only works with the deluxe door handles as shown in the photo. The Ford MPC describes those door handles as fitting the door panels with molded armrests, instead of the smaller detachable armrests on the base interiors. This style was used after 9/15/1971. It uses one bolt for attaching and has the heavy duty spring, which is the reason for the first revision. There may be a conflict with the earlier doors that take the two bolt style latch, please compare what you have with what you need.
