This is the correct base for a 1972 Mercury Cougar with a Q code 351-4V Cleveland engine. It came with a painted lid unless your car happened to have been ordered with the "Sporty Exhaust" package and then a chrome lid was included. One year only air cleaner for the Cougar. Ford casting number D2ZF-9600-EA or D2ZF-9600-KA.

Hard to find in this condition, the lower section has a metal tab that gets corrosion from the battery. Sold as a two piece set, Grade A will have undamaged mounting tabs. These were installed at the factory on 390 / 427 / 428 equipped cars that were exported to countries that did not require the smog system. They are much shorter than the over the Ford counter service plugs you see in the states that are put on after one removes the smog system.

Ford part number D2AZ-9A603-D (outer section) and D2AZ-9A603-B (inner section) make up this two piece metal shroud for all 1972 - 1973 H code 351-2V engines. The outer shield section is common to both 2V and 4V 1972 - 1973 351c engines but the inner is unique to the 2V.

This two piece heat shield has a very narrow application in that it is a one year only item and only for the 390 IP (Improved Performance). It does not mate to metal a "S" shaped heat riser tube but rather a flexible paper-foil tube that attaches to a reducer on the bottom side of the snorkel. Chrome air cleaner lid removed from a Q code, 351-4V or 351CJ 1972 Mercury Cougar or Ford Mustang, likely Torino and Mercury mid sized cars too. Ford / Mercury have had various part numbers listed for this basic lid over the years. The primary difference was the original lids included an engine size sticker. That is why there are so many listings, the basic part number is 9661. Chrome will be used, and will have some defects to the plating.
