The distributor is the brain for the ignition system of an engine. Our used distributors are sold used, meaning they came off of previously running engines. Like most things that are over 35 years old, they will have some wear and will not likely run like new. We recommend getting a quality rebuild of your distributor. We also suggest installing a Pertronix kit to eliminate the points. Pertronix is a drop in electronic ignition module available for any Ford distributor. Electronic ignition has a stronger spark which makes the engines run stronger and start much easier. *Concours guys note, the Pertronix ignition system while totally hidden in a stock for distributor, will have a one additional wire coming out of the distributor body. A properly set up distributor will have a certain amount of total advance that is gradually increased as the engine rpms increase. A new working vacuum advance unit should be installed during a refurbishing or rebuilding. Your distributor should have no play in the shaft, if there is any kind of movement it needs new bushings. Any kind of play in the distributor shaft creates a noticeable variation in timing, which can be seen with a timing light. A non working vacuum advance or a sticking breaker plate, can make an engine feel underpowered, give decreased fuel economy, and cause a hotter running engine.
