T5 TRANSMISSION INFORMATION
For any and all questions or technical support for this transmission or its installation, please call Kevin Classics 510-708-1136.
THIS TRANSMISSION HAS NO OIL IN IT!
Do not use gear oil in this transmission! Use about 3 quarts of Dextron III automatic transmission fluid only!
This is a world-class T5 1987- 1993 type that is the correct length input shaft for the 67 - 73 Cougar or Mustang conversion.
Features:
Rebuilt by an ASE-certified mechanic who has been specializing in the rebuild/restoration services of classic Ford components since 1996.
Upgraded cast iron throw-out bearing retainer.
Upgraded billet steel cluster gear retainer (the most beneficial upgrade you can do to a TS).
Factory Tremic brand top quality rebuild lot with U.S.A. made Tinker brand bearings.
This transmission is not painted! It has been vapor blasted, arid the beautiful surface finish will remain nice looking far longer than paint could last.
Has a reverse brake for ease of shift into a fully synchronized reverse (only the later T5's had this).
The T5 shifter will come up through the original hole in your Mustang floor.
Top-notch, friendly customer service.
Recommendations:
Fill plug not tight- remove plug, fill till oil just starts seeping out of the fill plug replace plug.
Do not over-tighten, fill, or drain plugs- these are pipe thread and will crack the main case if over tightened.
The shifter is not sealed on this unit! If you decide to put an aftermarket shifter or use the original shifter, you must remove the 4 bolts and use sealant (Permatex ultra black) under the shifter, and reinstall the 4 bolts, being careful not to set too much sealant in the 4 bolt holes.
Make sure you use a speedometer-driven gear (the small gear on the end of the Speedo cable) that is correct for a T5, C4 or a 3 speed. Do not use a 4 speed toploader reverse cut driven gear!
Visit www.LMR.com for a Speedo calculator.
Never put your car in reverse if the car is rolling forward at all. Very important.
Be sure to take your driver shaft measurement from the end of the transmission tail housing, not the end of the rubber seal below.
If you have the type of rear seal with a dust bellow, tell the drive shaft shop that the seal bellow sticks out about one and a sixteenth inches.
If you are converting a 4-speed car, you will need a new C4 automatic speedometer cable.
If you are converting a 3 or 4-speed car it would be a good idea to install a fresh new clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bushing, throw-out bearing, and have the flywheel resurfaced at this time (unless it has a known low mileage set).
Have the drive shop replace both U-joints, install the correct T5 conversion slip yoke, shorten, balance, and paint your drive shaft.
Do not reuse old U-joint straps.
When tightening the U-joint straps, be sure to tighten them evenly to make
sure the same amount ofthreads are showing sticking out ofthe nuts.
Freshen up the rear end to really utilize the 5-speed properly with a 3 :40,
3:55, 3:80, or 4:11 Traction Lok!
