This is the manual steering gear box for 1971 Mercury Cougars. Marked SMA-R and is 22:1 ratio. It is pretty rare to find a Cougar optioned without power steering. According to Kevin Marti's COUGAR...by the Numbers book 99% of all 1971 - 1973 Cougars came with power steering from the factory. If you have a non-power steering Cougar for these years you are in the 1% club. 1972-73 manual Steering boxes had a ratio of 24:1, and were tagged SMA-R.
We offer used boxes because in our experiences this box design is very durable and not as prone to wear like the early (1967 - 1970) style steering boxes.
